The Surgical Technologist Academic Teaching (STAT) program at WVU Medicine WVU Hospitals is designed to prepare student trainees for a healthcare career in surgical technology in diverse surgical settings through the obtainment of national practice certification. Team members in Surgical Services provide care to patients who need surgery or invasive procedures.
The six-month paid training program consists of 560 hours of classroom instruction and 400 hours of onsite clinicals at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, including WVU Medicine Surgical Services, WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital, and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute.
Students will perform clinical practices in diverse surgical specialties and procedural care, having access to the newest technology. In addition, clinical experts will provide mentored learning experiences. Students who complete the program will earn national certification through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and possess new perioperative competencies in aseptic technique, surgical specialties procedures, and professional teamwork.
Clinical Experience
Student trainees’ clinical experiences will be diverse, with clinical opportunities provided by the following surgical/procedural teams:
- J.W. Ruby Memorial 5NOR Level I Trauma Center
- J.W. Ruby Memorial 2WOR Ambulatory Care
- J.W. Ruby Memorial and WVU Medicine Children’s Endoscopy Services (adult and pediatric)
- WVU Medicine Children’s Level II Trauma Center
- WVU Medicine Children’s Birthing Center
- WVU Heart and Vascular Institute operative and procedural areas
- Sterile processing departments
How to Apply
Internal and external applicants must meet WVU Hospitals’ STAT program guideline requirements, and applicants for the program will be screened for upcoming cohorts. Six-month cohorts, available for 12 students in each cohort, will begin in January 2025 and July 2025.
Selected candidates will receive an offer of employment for the surgical technologist role and a program agreement. Candidates must agree to be employed full time at WVU Hospitals as surgical technologists during their program completion and certification obtainment. The hospital’s attendance policy will apply.
