Did you know that suffering from obesity is usually much more than a lack of willpower? Complex physical, mental, and social factors contribute to our weight and eating habits.

The Medical Weight Management Clinic offers a non-surgical, weight management program that provides each patient with a team of highly trained healthcare professionals who specialize in safe and healthy weight management. We are the first center in West Virginia to receive advanced designation in obesity medicine as an accredited center through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.

We can create an individualized nutrition and daily living plan that you will be able to maintain for life. Our team will assess your medical history, eating and activity habits, sleep patterns, and stress level, and perform comprehensive medical evaluations to help identify any barriers to weight management that you may face.

What to Expect

The Medical Weight Management Clinic is open to adults of all fitness levels and various states of health. During the program, you’ll learn personal lifestyle skills, such as self-monitoring of food intake, movement, sleep, and stress. We help you find what works for you, and make adjustments to achieve your weight management goals.

Every person’s weight management journey is different, so this program is individualized to help you achieve the results you’ve been looking for. Weight management is hard, so the last thing you need is to worry about being judged. You can feel comfortable knowing that our staff treat people of all sizes with respect. Your success is important to us, and you can remain in our program as long as you need our support.

Getting Started

Step one:

If your body mass index (BMI) is at least 32 kg/m2, you can ask to be referred to the Medical Weight Management Clinic by a physician or advanced practice provider.

Step two:

All Medical Weight Management participants must attend a program orientation session. We offer our mandatory program orientation as a pre-recorded session that is available for viewing here.

Step three:

Be on the lookout in the MyWVUChart app for a questionnaire that must be completed prior to being scheduled in the clinic. If you are not active on MyWVUChart, someone from the clinic will reach out to you about completing the intake questionnaire.

Step four:

Review our patient welcome handbook. The patient welcome handbook is a comprehensive guide to the Medical Weight Management program. You can also access the dietitian handbook separately here and the movement handbook separately here.

Eat Well, Live Well Group Visits

The Eat Well, Live Well group program is an eight-week weight management and health promotion course designed to help our patients improve their wellness. Based on the latest nutrition science, participants are provided weekly ideas on what lifestyle changes would best benefit them. Through interactions with the dietitians and the other group members, small, weekly goals are set and often achieved. Together, we encourage members to eat healthy, increase movement, and help to establish behaviors that will last.

Eat Well, Live Well classes occur every Monday and Tuesday from 4:30 – 5:30 pm via MyChart. Please join us in our next session and receive your road map to success. To register for the program, email medicalweightmanagement@hsc.wvu.edu or ask your provider at your next appointment.
