WVU Medicine’s general surgeons are experienced in all aspects of general surgical care and perform more than 2,500 procedures annually. They do a wide range of basic and advanced procedures involving the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the breast, endocrine system, hematopoietic system, and other parts of the body. Each surgeon is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
In addition to building practices in their specific areas of clinical experience, general surgeons provide 24-hour surgical coverage for emergencies and staff WVU Medicine’s Medical Access and Referral Service (MARS) line for urgent patient transfers and consultation requests from around the state and region.
Many of WVU Medicine’s general surgeons are specialists in minimally invasive techniques that reduce pain and shorten recovery periods for patients. Advanced imaging systems, specialized instruments, and computer-guided surgical navigation systems enhance surgeons’ abilities to provide the latest and best in surgical care and the best possible outcomes for patients with an ever-increasing number of conditions and disorders. Endoscopic techniques and procedures are performed frequently by WVU Medicine Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
