The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Thomas Memorial Hospital will prepare compassionate, highly competent, and adaptable internists who are committed to advancing the health of West Virginians and all populations they serve.

In alignment with the hospital’s mission to improve health through excellence in patient care, research, and education, the program will cultivate physicians who deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care across the spectrum of internal medicine. The program will train residents to develop strong clinical reasoning skills, mastery of core internal medicine competencies, and a sustained commitment to professionalism, ethical practice, and lifelong learning. Through rigorous clinical training, scholarly inquiry, and active participation in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, residents will be prepared to meet the evolving needs of diverse and medically complex patient populations.

Graduates of the program will be equipped to practice independently, pursue subspecialty training, and assume leadership roles within healthcare systems. Our Graduate Medical Education program is supported by dedicated residents, faculty, and staff who are committed to mentoring the next generation of physicians. Graduate Medical Education at Thomas Memorial Hospital is designed to provide residents with a supportive and collaborative learning environment. With educational resources, program leadership, faculty, and administrative support housed within a centralized location, residents benefit from readily accessible mentorship and a strong educational foundation throughout their training.

Residents also have the opportunity to work alongside medical students from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. These collaborative experiences strengthen residents’ teaching abilities, leadership skills, and commitment to mentoring future physicians.

Scholarly activity is a cornerstone of our Rresidency Program. Residents are encouraged to participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and other scholarly endeavors, with opportunities to present their work at regional and national conferences. Our dedicated research department provides comprehensive guidance and support throughout the research process, ensuring residents receive the mentorship, resources, and training necessary to develop meaningful scholarly projects
