Aspiring Nurse Program
The Aspiring Nurse Program at WVU Hospitals provides financial and human-centered support to nursing students enrolled at select schools in West Virginia and neighboring regions.
Students must be admitted and actively enrolled to a pre-licensure registered nursing program at a school with a formal Aspiring Nurse Program partnership with WVU Medicine prior to the application deadline.
Nursing students accepted into the program will receive up to $25,000 over the course of their study, including a final payment upon hire in exchange for a three-year work commitment following graduation.
MedEd Program
The WVU Medicine MedEd program is free and open to juniors and seniors at Morgantown High School and University High School in Monongalia County. There are limited spots available at each high school.
Successful program applicants will choose a career path (ambulatory care assistant or sterile processing technician) and take two courses during their junior and senior years. They will complete a paid internship during the second semester of their senior year at WVU Medicine and have the opportunity to take a certification exam at the end of the program, as applicable.
Successful program participants will be considered for full-time employment at WVU Medicine after graduation.
Project SEARCH
Project SEARCH at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is an internship experience for high school seniors or recently graduated students with mild and moderate special needs. The program was first established at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 1996, and WVU Hospitals is the first Project SEARCH site in West Virginia.
Once accepted into the program, student interns report to Ruby Memorial Hospital instead of their home school district classroom for the entire school year. Student interns rotate through several job roles at WVU Hospitals.
Project SEARCH serves as the student interns’ capstone educational experience and often leads to employment once the internships are complete.
Applications can be requested through high school guidance counselors and local county Departments of Rehabilitation Service. In addition to the application, interested students must pass a skills assessment evaluation and be interviewed as part of the acceptance process.
