Program Guidelines

WVU Hospitals sponsors educational programs in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Echocardiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Radiography, and Ultrasound.

Through a strong commitment to education and continued efforts to remain technologically advanced, WVU Hospitals affords students in the imaging sciences an excellent environment for developing academic, clinical, and professional expertise. Graduates from all programs are eligible to apply for the respective national credentialing exam in their respective discipline, and all educational components, clinical and didactic, are conducted within WVU Medicine facilities.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is an 18-month certificate program specializing in abdominal, obstetrical, and gynecological sonography. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS). Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination, administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Successful completion of the SPI examination qualifies graduates to sit for the ARDMS Abdominal, Obstetrical, and Gynecological Sonography specialty certification examinations.

Echocardiography

The Adult Echocardiography program is a 12-month certificate program providing comprehensive clinical and didactic education in echocardiography imaging. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Successful completion of the SPI examination then qualifies graduates as eligible to apply for the ARDMS specialty certification examination in Adult Echocardiography (AE). Graduates may also apply for the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) exam to obtain a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging program at the WVU Center for Advanced Imaging is a 12-month certificate program offering comprehensive didactic and clinical education in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Successful completion qualifies graduates as eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) primary certification exam in MRI pending ARRT review and approval of the applicant. In addition, the program fulfills the educational requirements for all states requiring state licensure or certification.

Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine program is a 12-month certificate program designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in Nuclear Medicine Technology through didactic instruction and applied clinical education. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine (JRCNMT). Successful completion qualifies graduates as eligible to sit for the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) exam and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam in Nuclear Medicine.

Radiation Therapy

The Radiation Therapy program is a 12-month certificate program consisting of approximately 40 hours per week of clinical and didactic instruction. Successful completion qualifies graduates as eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam in Radiation Therapy pending ARRT review and approval. In addition, the program fulfills the educational requirements for all states requiring state licensure or certification.

Radiography

The Radiography program is a two-year (22-month) certificate program offering comprehensive clinical and didactic education in Radiologic Technology. Successful completion qualifies graduates as eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam in Radiography, pending ARRT review and approval. In addition, the program fulfills the educational requirements for all states requiring state licensure or certification.
