Mother Infant Care Center
Grant Memorial Hospital has a quality birthing center, delivering more than 300 babies each year. The Mother Infant Care Center features private and semi-private rooms with all the necessary monitoring equipment. We participate in the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership, with the ability to teleconference with WVU Medicine neonatologists when needed.
Accommodations
The Mother Infant Care Center features private birthing rooms that are equipped to provide care and comfort to laboring mothers and families.
The rooms feature large, private bathrooms; closets for the patient’s belongings; and a sleeper chair for your support person to rest. Each room has specialized birthing beds for the comfort of our mothers and a Dräger warmer equipped with auto breath for the care of newborns.
We also offer television and Wi-Fi, with laptops available by request.
Staffing
We are staffed with one obstetrician, who comes with many years of experience in the care of pregnant and delivering women. All Mother Infant Care Center nurses are certified in neonatal resuscitation and fetal monitoring.
We also offer breastfeeding support with a certified lactation counselor on staff.
Newborn Care
A newborn screening is performed on all babies before they are discharged from Grant Memorial Hospital. This screening tests a newborn baby for certain disorders and conditions that can hinder normal development.
The screening includes a healthy hearing screen to identify babies born with hearing loss, pulse oximetry screening for congenital heart defects, and a blood test, where we collect a few drops of blood from the baby’s heel to test for congenital disorders.
Visitation Guidelines
Visiting hours in the Mother Infant Care Center are from 10 am – 8 pm to allow mothers to rest and learn about caring for themselves and their new baby. Due to the frequency of childhood illnesses, children ages 12 and under are not allowed to visit unless they are a sibling of the newborn.
Visitation guidelines are subject to change during influenza season.
