After Your Visit

Discharge

Once you have reached your recovery, you will be discharged. This process involves a moderate amount of paperwork. Please be aware that it will take approximately one hour to complete paperwork once your doctor notifies the nursing staff that you can go home, knowing this will prevent your family or friend from having to wait before you can be discharged.

A nurse will also explain how to take care of yourself at home, and you will be escorted in a wheelchair from your room to the main entrance.

Support Groups

Caregivers Support Group
United Hospital Center in conjunction with WVU Medicine Home Care would like to welcome you to our Caregivers Support Group.

This face-to-face support group provides an opportunity to take a break from your responsibilities and nurture your emotional and physical health. We understand caring for a loved one can be stressful and challenging. The purpose of the group is to provide a time and space from family members to discuss feelings, concerns, and attitudes in a caring atmosphere.

The group will be facilitated by a Social Worker for WVU Medicine Hospice and other members of the care team. The support group will meet monthly on the third Wednesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. Group participant size will be limited. To register for upcoming support groups or for additional information please contact WVU Medicine Hospice at 681-342-3261.

Grief-related Support Groups
(for those who have lost a loved one)
The WVU Medicine Hospice staff coordinates two support groups to help individuals/families who have lost a loved one. The support groups are available not only to those who have lost a loved one as a result of a terminal illness, but also to anyone seeking support. This service is available to anyone regardless of their past or present use of hospice services.

The support group helps individuals overcome grief by:

  • Making available a trusted and compassionate person to listen to your concerns
  • Providing education about the grief process and what you might expect to happen during your period of bereavement
  • Teaching you new ways to cope with the stress of loss and grief
  • Providing help in becoming involved in a new life – seeking out new support persons, groups, and activities
  • Simply knowing someone is available during time of need

Support group participants are encouraged to become involved by:

  • Sharing thoughts and ideas out loud. This can often help gain a better perspective about the meaning and effect of the loss
  • Discussing painful feelings such as despair, anger or guilt as a way to reduce the intensity of those feelings
  • Reminiscing about their loved one in order to help gain a better perspective on the relationship they shared
  • Discussing the changes they are experiencing in their life. This may ease the transition to a new beginning
  • Grief support group meets in the WVU Medicine Hospice office

A grief support group for widows & widowers also meets in the WVU Medicine Hospice office at UHC.

For more information and to register, call WVU Medicine Hospice at 304-624-2424 and ask for the bereavement counselor.
