Provider-based clinics

What is a provider-based clinic?

Provider-based is a payor designation that allows hospitals to offer outpatient services in a variety of locations. CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) outlines several requirements that must be met to operate provider-based locations. One of the most fundamental of these conditions is that the location is operated by and fully integrated with a hospital.

Why do WVU Medicine hospitals participate in this program?

Operating a location as provider-based allows WVU Medicine to bill and receive reimbursement from third-party payors at agreed upon outpatient rates. This arrangement provides our hospitals with the opportunity to offer more services, more specialties, and more locations for our patients in support of our mission to improve patient care.

Offering provider-based services helps our member hospitals take steps to ensure high-quality care is available to the communities of West Virginia and surrounding states, while also mitigating the reduction of healthcare reimbursement by various payors.

How does provider-based status impact me as a patient?

The care you receive at provider-based locations is held to the same standard and surveyed by the same accrediting body as our hospitals. Therefore, you can expect a higher quality of care and patient safety than at a typical free-standing physician office. This status also requires an integrated medical record between locations and the operating hospital, which improves continuity of care.

Additionally, services received will be billed as hospital outpatient services. When receiving services at a provider-based location, you will want to reference your outpatient insurance benefit rather than physician office benefit for accurate information regarding potential patient responsibility. Benefit plan coverage for hospital services may vary.
