At WVU Medicine, we're committed to bringing the most advanced surgical technology to patients across West Virginia and the surrounding region. Our robotic-assisted surgery program pairs the skill and judgment of our fellowship-trained surgeons with state-of-the-art robotic platforms, giving patients access to minimally invasive options that once required a trip to a major metropolitan center.
Guided by a surgeon’s hands, the robotic arms of the da Vinci Surgical System® allow us to perform major surgery through tiny incisions with pinpoint accuracy. The 3D imaging provided by robotic-assisted surgical technology gives our surgeons a highly magnified view of the treatment area.

With its recent acquisition of 17 additional Intuitive da Vinci® 5 surgical systems, WVU Medicine is now home to the largest fleet of surgical robots in the region.
Da Vinci 5 is the newest entry to the da Vinci portfolio of systems, which also includes da Vinci X®, da Vinci Xi®, and da Vinci SP®. It is Intuitive’s most advanced and integrated platform, which is designed to transform minimally invasive surgery to enable better outcomes, efficiency, and actionable insights.
With more than 150 new design innovations, da Vinci 5 expands upon core da Vinci system features, including improved visualization, the sense of feel, and the ability to connect with peers through telepresence.

What is Robotic-Assisted Surgery?
Robotic-assisted surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery. Instead of a single large incision, your surgeon operates through a few small incisions using specialized instruments controlled from a console. A high-definition, 3D camera gives the surgeon a magnified view of the surgical site, while robotic arms translate the surgeon's hand movements into precise, tremor-filtered motion inside the body.
It's important to know the robot doesn't operate on its own. Your surgeon is in full control at every step, guiding every movement of the instruments throughout the procedure. Individual results vary by patient and procedure, and your surgical team will help you understand what to expect for your specific case.
