WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeon Dr. Pedro Aguilar named Patient Choice Award Winner

Also honored in Pittsburgh Magazine’s list of “Top Doctors” and named by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor

UNIONTOWN, Pa. – WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital and WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeon Pedro Aguilar, M.D., was selected as the Hospital’s Patient Choice Award Winner for the first quarter of 2026.

“I’m honored by this recognition, which reflects the dedication of our entire team,” Dr. Aguilar said. “I’m grateful to work with such a talented and compassionate staff who help ensure our patients receive exceptional care every day.”

Aguilar practices in the WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital Spine Center, serving patients in Uniontown and Monongahela. He was recognized for his significant clinical experience in spine surgery, as well as exceptional outcomes and patient satisfaction scores. These scores reflect data available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Press Ganey patient satisfaction surveys.

Patients responding to Press Ganey surveys highlight Aguilar’s kindness and empathy, coupled with his talents as a “gifted surgeon.” Press Ganey is a healthcare performance improvement company that measures and analyzes patient experience to help health systems improve.

According to Press Ganey survey results, 95 percent of patients said they would recommend Aguilar to others, indicating very high patient satisfaction and trust. Comments received from patients include:

·        “Dr. Aguilar was very helpful, kind, and respectful.”

·        “He explains the procedure well, answers all questions patiently, and presents with a calm yet professional demeanor.”

·        “Dr. Aguilar has been nothing but an informative, caring individual during my entire treatment process.”

·        “I am completely pain-free, and I’m able to enjoy life again.”

Additionally, CMS data indicates that Aguilar performs a high volume of complex spine procedures, including spinal fusions and laminectomies, a procedure to remove the back part of the vertebra to relieve spinal cord or nerve pressure. High procedural volume is frequently associated with greater technical experience and familiarity with a wide range of spinal conditions.

“This data underscores Dr. Aguilar’s strong foundation of expertise in delivering surgical care, coupled with his patient-centered approach,” Karyn Wallace, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital, said. “Dr. Aguilar’s work reflects our organization’s commitment to compassion, excellence, and community connection, and his Patient Choice Award is well-deserved.”

Aguilar also participates in CMS quality assessments under the Quality Payment Program (QPP). This program evaluates clinicians on measures such as quality reporting, improvement activities, and cost efficiency. Aguilar’s QPP score is above 90, which reflects his commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and value-based care. This score represents high performance relative to national benchmarks, indicating that the Spine Center exceeds CMS expectations for quality, efficiency, and care coordination.

In addition to his current Patient Choice Award honor, Aguilar was included in Pittsburgh Magazine’s list of “Top Doctors” in spring 2025. This month, he was recognized by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor, in the top 7 percent of physicians nationwide.
