Six WVU Medicine hospitals awarded for excellence by The Chartis Center for Rural Health

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In observation of National Rural Health Day (Nov. 20), six WVU Medicine hospitals have earned 2025 Performance Leadership Awards for excellence in rural healthcare. Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards program recognizes top quartile performance (i.e., 75th percentile or above) among rural hospitals in Quality, Outcomes, and/or Patient Perspective.

While Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg was recognized in all three areas of emphasis, five other WVU Medicine hospitals each received a Performance Leadership Award in one of the three categories.

Areas of high performance by hospital include:

“These recognitions underscore the important roles our rural hospitals play and why we must invest in them as a Health System,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said. “Each of these facilities serves as an anchor in its community and is essential to our growing, interconnected network of care.”

The Performance Leadership Awards program is based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, a comprehensive and objective framework for assessing how rural hospitals are performing.

INDEX benchmarks are relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations, and state offices of rural health to measure performance across multiple areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“The areas of quality, outcomes, and patient perspective are cornerstones of healthcare delivery across rural America, and this year’s Performance Leadership Award recipients are establishing a standard of excellence for their rural peers to follow,” Michael Topchik, executive director of the Chartis Center for Rural Health, said. “We are delighted to shine a spotlight on such strong performance and honor the achievement of these hospitals on National Rural Health Day.”
