Our cardiologists offer comprehensive evaluation and management of diseases of the heart and circulatory system and work with primary care physicians to ensure coordinated, continuous care.

Our faculty have expertise in every aspect of cardiac care, ranging from standard procedures such as outpatient consultation, echocardiography, and angiography to advanced clinical research into heart failure, preventive cardiology, and radio-frequency ablation.

Special services include physical fitness evaluation, non-invasive and invasive studies, interventional procedures, and radioisotope examinations of the heart.

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute’s Cardiology Section is led by Partho Sengupta, M.D., Abnash C. Jain Chair & Professor of Cardiology, chief of the Division of Cardiology in the Heart and Vascular Institute and in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Medicine, director of Cardiac Imaging and chair of Cardiovascular Innovation at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute.

Telemedicine Clinics

Telemedicine is a virtual consultation with a physician that provides access to evaluation and treatment for patients in remote areas. Many small, rural hospitals lack specialists in various disciplines, and telemedicine allows much of the needed care to be delivered through the use of simple applications that are similar to FaceTime or Skype with extra precautions built in to maintain privacy. We can utilize telemedicine to connect with patients who live far away or are too ill to travel.

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute has taken steps to utilize this technology and bring world-class heart care to rural communities, helping rural physicians and hospitals
deliver the highest possible quality of care to their communities.

Telemedicine services include consultations or follow-up for:

  • Artery Disease
  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Valvular Heart Disease
  • Heart Rhythm Disorders
  • Hypertension
  • Pre-Op Clearance
  • General Cardiac Need Management

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute offers a comprehensive arrhythmia service that focuses on the latest medical and interventional approaches to arrhythmia management.

The following procedures are offered:

  • Pacemaker implantation and follow-up
  • Defibrillator implantation and follow-up
  • Biventricular pacing for heart failure
  • Laser lead extraction of pacemaker and defibrillator leads
  • Electrophysiologic evaluation of arrhythmias
  • Catheter ablation of SVT, atrial fibrillation, and ventricular arrhythmias
  • WATCHMAN heart implant

In addition to standard mapping and ablation techniques to treat arrhythmias, our center has the ability to incorporate cardiac CT scans into computerized 3D mapping of arrhythmias.

We offer traditional radiofrequency (heating) ablation, irrigated radiofrequency ablation (for deeper lesion depth in certain heart chambers), and even cryoablation (freezing) for special applications.

The full spectrum of cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator care is offered. To meet the needs of our patients, we coordinate care with the referring physician to ease long-term, follow-up issues.

At The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, our cardiac rehabilitation team works to help you resume your normal lifestyle as soon as possible following a heart problem.

cardiacrehab

This team uses an individualized approach to patient care. The rehab plan is customized to each patient’s needs, and that plan is continuously evaluated.

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the care offered for patients who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, valve replacement, heart transplant, angina or angioplasty.

Our providers also recognize the emotional burdens associated with heart attacks, such as depression, anxiety, fear, and anger. We often link rehab patients with a specialist from our mental health services to help them deal with the after-effects of their care.

Nutrition plays an important part in keeping a heart healthy. Our physicians and dieticians can provide patients with healthy diet counseling and assessment. Our dietary recommendations are customized based on individual needs and preferences.

Members of the rehabilitation team can include the following:

  • physician
  • nurse
  • physical therapist
  • dietician
  • social worker
  • exercise physiologist
  • psychologist
  • education specialist
  • chaplain
  • occupational therapist
  • vocational rehabilitation specialist
