Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Our team works to help patients resume their normal lifestyle as soon as possible following a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement or repair, heart transplant, stable angina, angioplasty or congestive heart failure.

Cardio-Pulmonary rehabilitation is an integral part of the care offered for patients who have had heart related issues.

Patients who have had a heart attack, Coronary bypass surgery, Valve replacement or repair, Heart Transplant, stable angina, Angioplasty or Congestive Heart Failure are eligible to attend Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation (Cardiac Rehab).

  • Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation has been shown to:
  • Reduce the risk of a future heart related event
  • Promote adherence to a healthier lifestyle
  • Increase your capacity for exercise
  • Improve quality of life by decreasing depression and/or anxiety

The Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute is certified through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitations to ensure that we are maintaining the highest standards of care. Our team works with patients to help them achieve mutually established goals for exercise levels and life style modification. Plans are individualized based on the patient’s needs and goals. The 36 session program meets 3 times per week achieve gradual progression to the established goals.

 

The Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation team is comprised of Physicians, Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Exercise Specialists and Respiratory Therapists. If needed referrals can be made to Physical Therapists, Registered Dieticians and Diabetic Educators.

 

Our providers assess for emotional issues commonly associated with heart disease. They can help patients recognize the signs of depression and anxiety. Coping techniques are discussed and if needed, referrals can be made to Mental Health Professionals.

 

Dietary changes are often a major concern after a cardiac event. The Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab staff can will complete a dietary assessment and guide you in making healthier choices. If you would like additional information, Dieticians and Diabetic Educators can be consulted as appropriate.

 

The ultimate goal for Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab is to help patients understand their Cardiac Event and provide information so they can be an active participant in their overall health management.
