For a number of years, the hours of service given by the volunteers at Wheeling Hospital have exceeded those found at any other area hospitals. With more than 37,000 hours recorded by the hospital’s volunteers in the past year, it’s unlikely that statistic will change. Volunteers can be seen working in nearly 35 areas of the hospital, including Outpatient Registration, the Surgical Waiting area, the Gift Shoppe, the Mail Room, the Information Desk and everywhere in between. They make deliveries of mail, flowers and gifts. Volunteers assist visitors, patients as well as employees, and many spend hours answering phones, typing, filing and running errands.

Wheeling Hospital volunteers come from all walks of life and bring with them a wonderful diversity of skills and talents.

Junior volunteers must be at least 15 years old. But age is not a factor for the senior population, as witnessed by several volunteers who are in their 80s and 90s.

A number of husband and wife teams, as well as many men, are part of a volunteer corps of 175.

Those interested in becoming a Wheeling Hospital volunteer may contact the director of Volunteer/Guest Services to learn more about the many rewards inherent in giving service to others.
