Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Wheeling Hospital Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program in Wheeling WV is an outstanding opportunity for family physicians seeking further training in emergency medicine and the ability to become board – certified in emergency medicine. The AAPS’ American Academy of Emergency Physicians (AAEP) certifies the fellowship program. Fellows take the exam for the ABPS Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM). ABPS certifies both allopathic and osteopathic trained physicians in 17 medical specialties.

The busiest hospital in our two-state area, the annual ED volume is over 51,000 visits. The ED offers 34 private rooms where fellows receive specific training in trauma care, management of acute cardiac patients (STEMI and others) as well as comprehensive management of stroke patients.

The fellowship enables the family physician to take the board exam upon satisfactory completion of the program.

Our program offers three positions each academic year. The curriculum includes 14 (10-hour) shifts in the Emergency Department and other clinical training pertinent to the ED including airway management, ultrasound, splinting, etc. There is significant opportunity to tailor the curriculum to personal career objectives. Opportunities for participation in hospital committees, research activities and quality improvement initiatives also are available.

Fellows participate in monthly didactics that focus on improvement of clinical skills and enhancement of their hands-on training with ER procedures and ultrasound.

We provide a comprehensive orientation which focuses on skills the fellow needs on day one.

A salary of $100,000 is provided as well as benefits including health insurance, options for dental and vision, professional liability, and more.
