Discharge

Before you can leave the hospital, you must meet some physical requirements, which your doctor will discuss with you. Plan to rest for at least 12 to 24 hours after going home. If you have any type of sedation, a driver must take you home, and you must not drive for 24 hours. We suggest that you have a responsible adult stay with you the night after having a procedure.

All patients will receive written instructions concerning medications, activities, return appointments, etc. If you don’t understand any part of your written discharge instructions, please make sure to ask your nurse to explain them in more detail. Our Care Management Department can help arrange for home health or other services you may need after leaving the hospital.

MyWVUChart is also an excellent tool for maintaining discharge instructions once you return home. you can request an appointment with your provider, view and download a copy of your Patient Health Summary, view your test results, refill prescriptions, and communicate electronically with your medical care team. If you experience any changes in your condition after you leave the hospital, go immediately to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

To obtain medical records, you may now request your records by using the records request tool, through MyWVUChart, email, mail, or calling 304-598-4110 (or toll free 844-484-0304) Monday through Friday from 8 am – 4 pm.
