These two major capital projects are designed to meet the needs of a growing population while strengthening access to high-quality, patient-centered care across the Eastern Panhandle.

Berkeley Medical Center: New Patient Tower & Enhanced Campus Infrastructure

WVU Medicine is transforming care at Berkeley Medical Center with the construction of a new patient tower, expanding inpatient bed capacity from 190 to 316 and eliminating all semi-private rooms.
Total Investment: $200.9 million

Project Highlights:

  • Increase inpatient capacity from 190 to 316 beds, eliminating all semi-private rooms
  • Replace LINAC (linear accelerator) in the Radiation Oncology Center
  • Redesigned Emergency Department flow, including a separate pediatric ED entry and waiting room
  • Up to 450 additional parking spaces, accessible by parking bridge and shuttle service

Timeline: Construction begins August 2025 with parking infrastructure, followed by the patient tower groundbreaking in November. The new tower is expected to open in early 2028.

Looking Ahead

These transformational projects are expected to create 550 jobs in Berkeley and Jefferson counties within five years, with an additional 150 indirect FTEs during construction. With Berkeley County projected to grow by 40% by 2040, WVU Medicine is committed to evolving alongside the community to meet future healthcare needs.
