Education

Welcome to WVU Medicine! We look forward to creating a positive educational experience for students, instructors, and through our partnerships with schools.

If you will be on-site at BMC, JMC, and UHA East please refer to the following information, guides, and checklists for orientation processes and more.

This includes any internships, externships, clinical rotations, observations, practicum, and/or capstone experiences. This information is not applicable to MD, DO, PA, or NP/DNP students. Please contact Student Services of the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division for more information.

Student Guide Checklist

Step 1: The process for requesting clinical experiences varies according to type:

  1. For rotations, observations, and/or capstone experiences ONLY (i.e. local programs sending groups of students): school will request; students in these groups are not to place requests independently.
  2. All other internship, externship, and practicum placements (including non-NP graduate nursing programs) are the responsibility of the student and/or school to obtain. However, please ask your school to communicate all arrangements to the BMC/JMC Student Affiliation Coordinator for proper onboarding to take place prior to arrival

Step 2: An academic affiliation agreement (AA) must exist between our hospitals and the specific program at your institution prior to any clinical/non-clinical experience. Particularly if you are coming individually from a program that does not regularly send students, see that an AA exists and does not expire prior to the end of your scheduled experience. Contact your institution for more information.

*Note: This process can take months, so start early if an AA is not in place or is due to expire.

Step 3: Read and complete the following documentation.

  1. Read the Student Code of Conduct below.
  2. Completion of onboarding modules via learning management system (Workday).
  3. Documentation of current and proper:
    1. Immunization per CDC recommendations for healthcare workers.
    2. Influenza vaccine during flu season (required annually).
    3. PPD or chest x-ray with negative result (within previous 12 months); chest x-ray only required for positive PPD.
    4. Criminal Background Check.
    5. For Clinical Students/Instructors: AHA HCP BLS CPR Certification – Current.
    6. For Clinical Instructors Only: Current WV license confirmed and all other requirements above.
    7. Urine Drug Screen with negative result.

Step 4: Once you have received confirmation that you are cleared for clinical, obtain a student ID badge according to instructions provided by your school. It is required that you wear both your school and hospital-issued badges while on campus. Find more information on badges in the references section below.
