Vinay Badhwar, MD, FACS, FACC
Dr. Badhwar is the executive chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute. He is internationally recognized as a master cardiac valve surgeon and a team builder with extensive healthcare leadership experience.
A national expert in complex mitral valve repair, atrial fibrillation surgery, minimally invasive valve surgery, and robotic surgery, Dr. Badhwar is co-director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute’s Center for Mitral Valve Disease and director of the Center for Atrial Fibrillation.
Dr. Badhwar is also the Gordon F. Murray Professor and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery.
He previously served as the chief of cardiac surgery at the University of Pittsburgh’s Presbyterian Hospital and director of cardiac surgery for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Heart and Vascular Institute.
Dr. Badhwar has lectured worldwide in the areas of mitral valve repair and atrial fibrillation surgery and holds several prominent leadership positions in national cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology organizations. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Heart Valve Society, and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery.
An accomplished clinical researcher and innovator, Dr. Badhwar is widely published, holds several patents, and is a member of the editorial boards of The Journal of Heart Valve Disease and The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Mohamad Alkhouli, MD, FACC
Dr. Alkhouli is a coronary and structural interventional cardiologist. He is the co-director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute’s Center for Mitral Valve Disease. He also serves as the co-director of clinical research. An assistant professor in the WVU School of Medicine, Dr. Alkhouli is the associate program director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program.
After earning his medical degree from the Damascus University School of Medicine in Syria, Dr. Alkhouli completed his internship and residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He also did fellowships in cardiovascular disease and vascular medicine at Temple, as well as a coronary and endovascular interventions fellowship at University of Rochester Medical Center and an advanced fellowship in structural heart disease interventions at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Alkhouli is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, Vascular Medicine, and Endovascular Intervention.
Dr. Alkhouli has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed journal articles and has given poster and oral presentations at several conferences.
Brian Grose, MD
Dr. Grose is the director of cardiothoracic anesthesia for the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute. An assistant professor in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia, he serves as vice chair for clinical operations.
After earning his medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine, Dr. Grose completed his residency in anesthesia at WVU. He is board certified in anesthesiology.
Luke Marone, MD
Nationally recognized vascular surgeon, Luke Marone, MD, serves as co-director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and chief of Vascular Interventional Radiology Services at WVU Medicine. Dr. Marone is also professor of Surgery and Radiology in the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
He earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in vascular surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Before coming to the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Marone was the chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at UPMC Passavant Hospital and director of Peripheral Vascular Intervention at the UPMC Health Systems.
He is board certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
James D. Mills, MD, FACC
Dr. Mills is co-director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute Center for Mitral Valve Disease and assistant professor of medicine in the section of cardiology in the WVU School of Medicine. His areas of interest include general consultative cardiology and noninvasive cardiac imaging including nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiac computed tomography.
A graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine, Dr. Mills completed an internal medicine residency and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Pittsburgh. After a research fellowship, he was appointed to the staff as an assistant professor of medicine in the division of cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
In addition to cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Mills holds board certifications in both nuclear cardiology and adult comprehensive echocardiography. The author of multiple abstracts, peer-reviewed articles, and book chapters, Dr. Mills’ research interests include assessment of endothelial function, cardiac imaging of myocardial blood flow, and valvular heart disease. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and is a founding member of the Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography.
Lawrence M. Wei, MD
Dr. Wei is the co-director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute Center for Aortic Surgery and director of the Center for Aortic Valve Disease. He is also an associate professor of Surgery in the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Dr. Wei, who specializes in minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery, is board certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery.
Dr. Wei was previously an associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship training.
A member of many regional and national professional organizations, Dr. Wei has published dozens of scholarly articles and papers. His current research interests include beating heart coronary revascularization, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, robotic cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, and mitral valve repair.
