Uniontown Hospital’s new WVU Medicine Children’s Birthing Center celebrated the moment with a ribbon cutting and community celebration on Thursday, Dec. 5.
“Providing our community with a high-quality, full-service birthing center helps fulfill our mission of improving the health of our community through excellence in patient care, while also honoring a commitment to the 140,000 residents in Fayette County and the surrounding region,” Carrie E. Willetts, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital, said. “What makes this initiative unique is the incredible support, partnership, and engagement we have received from so many on the local, state, regional, and national levels.”
While many labor and delivery units across rural Pennsylvania face closure, the opening of the WVU Medicine Birthing Center at Uniontown Hospital demonstrates the Health System’s ongoing commitment to expanding world-class care for expectant mothers, especially in rural and underserved areas.
“This marks an important milestone for Uniontown Hospital and the community it serves. I’m grateful to Carrie and her team for making this all happen, as well as the many generous donors who stepped up to make this a reality – this was a heavy lift, but the right thing to do for the community and our patients,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said. “Everyone in Uniontown and Fayette County should have peace of mind that WVU Medicine will always be here to serve this great community – our commitment runs long and deep.”
The Birthing Center offers expectant mothers five newly renovated labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, 11 postpartum rooms, and a new c-section suite. Along with the new state-of-the-art equipment comes access to the advanced care provided by WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.
“WVU Medicine’s commitment to providing healthcare to the women of Southwest Pennsylvania continues with this important milestone, the restoration of access to one of the most fundamental needs for women in our region – the ability to give birth close to home,” Lawrence Glad, M.D., medical director, WVU Medicine Children’s Birthing Center, said. “We are excited that a unified team of providers – including certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians – will work together to provide high-quality obstetric care to our patients.”
This project was also made possible through the generosity of many in the Uniontown and Fayette County communities who help provide labor and delivery services for low-risk births.
