Adult Inpatient Services
Adult Inpatient Services (ages 18+)
Adults in psychiatric crisis may require short-term inpatient care for comprehensive assessment, stabilization, and treatment. WVU Healthy Minds offers a variety of structured inpatient programs tailored to the needs of individuals with serious mental health conditions.
Each inpatient program provides the patient with a closely supervised and structured environment. Patients may be admitted for a wide variety of psychiatric disorders, such as:
- Major depressive disorder
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Substance use disorder
- Schizophrenia and other serious psychiatric conditions
Length of stay varies depending upon the nature of the disorder. Typically, patients will remain hospitalized for three-to-five days.
Adult Inpatient Programs
Adults who require comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment to stabilize their symptoms may enter one of our short-term inpatient programs.
Adult Inpatient Unit (Morgantown)
This short-term inpatient program provides a highly structured, closely supervised environment for adults experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. Common conditions treated include:
- Depression
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Other serious mental health conditions
Services include:
- Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
- Medication management
- Individual, group, and family counseling
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), if indicated
- Discharge planning with coordinated outpatient follow-up
Morgantown Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
The Healthy Minds – Chestnut Ridge Intensive Care Unit is a secure acute care unit that provides a safe environment for individuals having severe psychiatric symptoms such as:
- Delusions or hallucinations
- Suicidal or homicidal thoughts
- Extreme depression or anxiety
- Cognitive or behavioral changes related to dementia
Services provided include:
- 24/7 medical supervision
- Evaluation and initiation of ECT (as needed)
- Testing and diagnosis of psychiatric or cognitive conditions
- Individual and group therapy focused on daily living, coping, and life management skills
- Discharge planning with coordinated follow-up care and transportation assistance
Bridgeport Psychiatric Care Unit
The adult Psychiatric Care Unit is a specialized inpatient service that provides a less-restrictive alternative to full psychiatric hospitalization. It focuses on early stabilization and preventing the need for admission to a more intensive unit. Ideal for patients who need short-term intervention but do not require high-acuity care
