WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital recognizes three extraordinary team members

UNIONTOWN, Pa. – WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital recently recognized three employees – Donald Fenton; Thomas Ravenscroft, L.P.N.; and Gary Workman – as extraordinary team members.

Fenton, a respiratory therapist in Cardiopulmonary Services, received the Being Extraordinary Every day (BEE) Award for Extraordinary Team Members, which recognizes nursing care assistants, techs, ED associates, and medical assistants whose behind-the-scenes efforts create a powerful impact on the Hospital’s culture and community.

His nomination reads, “During his treatment rounds, Don spoke with a patient with intellectual disabilities who mentioned wishing they had some raisins to eat. After finishing his rounds, Don called his wife and asked her to purchase raisins and bring them to the Hospital. He then surprised the patient with the snack.

“It’s thoughtful gestures like this that leave a lasting impression and show our patients that their well-being is truly our priority. When we pay attention to the small details of a patient’s stay, it demonstrates an even deeper commitment to the larger aspects of their care. Thank you, Don, for going above and beyond. Your compassion and dedication are a positive reflection of our department, our hospital, and our entire Health System.”

Ravenscroft, who works in the Hospital’s Emergency Department, received The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses, which is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

He was nominated by the family member of a patient who ultimately passed away. The nomination states, “He handled my mom with such tenderness and respect, and the care he showed her — even after death — brought us a sense of comfort and dignity when we needed it most. Tom went far beyond his role as a nurse. He showed up not only as a medical professional, but as a deeply compassionate human being. Because of him, my mom was treated with dignity both in life and after death, and our family felt supported during our most vulnerable moments.

“Nurse Tom truly embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. His kindness, empathy, and selflessness left a lasting and unforgettable impact on our family, and we will carry his compassion with us for the rest of our lives.”

Workman, Hospital chaplain, received The Sunshine Award for exceptional service, which celebrates the dedication of non-clinical support staff who make a meaningful impact through compassion, care, and everyday acts that brighten the lives of those they serve.

“Gary is an amazing example of what a kind, caring, and compassionate human being is. He always goes above and beyond for our patients and their families, ensuring their spiritual needs are met,” the nominator wrote.

“He was able to assist and build a rapport with an overwhelmed family following their loved one’s cardiac arrest. He was able to help guide them and keep them calm while also helping to keep the ICU organized with the sheer number of family members visiting the patient. Gary is an unbelievable asset to our hospital and community. Thank you for all you do for not only our patients but our staff, too.”
