WVU Medicine creating pathways to nursing careers for veterans
State recognition highlights resources and support for military-connected students
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU Medicine Center for Nursing Education (CNE) has been designated a Purple Star Facility by the West Virginia Department of Education’s Veterans Education and Training Program in recognition of its commitment to supporting veterans and military-connected students as they pursue educational and career opportunities in healthcare.
The Purple Star designation identifies educational institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating welcoming, supportive environments for military-connected learners and their families. Purple Star facilities provide resources, guidance, and services designed to help veterans successfully transition into educational programs and the workforce.
“This recognition reflects our commitment to ensuring veterans and military-connected students have the support and resources they need to succeed,” Tanya Rogers, Ed.D., M.S.N., R.N., C.N.E., assistant vice president of the WVU Medicine Center for Nursing Education, said.
“Many veterans bring valuable experiences, leadership skills, and a strong sense of service to the nursing profession. We are proud to create an environment where they can continue their education and prepare for meaningful careers in healthcare.”
As a Purple Star Facility, the Center for Nursing Education will display the designation as a visible symbol of its dedication to serving veterans and military-connected students. The recognition aligns with the Center’s mission of preparing the next generation of nurses while fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
The designation was achieved through the efforts of Karen Martinez, Ph.D., M.Sc., M.A., financial aid counselor for the Center for Nursing Education, who led the application process.
“We are honored to receive this designation and grateful to Dr. Martinez for her leadership throughout the process,” Rogers said. “Her work demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of all students and ensuring those who have served our country feel welcomed and supported throughout their educational journey.”
The WVU Medicine Center for Nursing Education is a hospital-based nursing program that prepares students for careers in professional nursing through classroom instruction, simulation-based learning, and hands-on clinical experiences across the WVU Medicine system.
