WVU Medicine and Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston announce naming of new regional cancer complex

WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital and the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston announced Friday, August 22, the next evolution of their historic partnership that will transform cancer care in the Ohio Valley. Through a $10 million donation overseen by the Diocese, the future state-of-the-art regional cancer complex will be named the WVU Cancer Institute St. Joseph Regional Cancer Complex.

The announcement was celebrated during a special ceremony held at Wheeling Hospital, bringing together health system leadership, diocesan representatives, and community members to honor this extraordinary gift.

The Diocese’s commitment ensures the new cancer complex will provide advanced cancer treatment and support services close to home for patients and families across the region. The naming recognizes St. Joseph, a figure revered for his compassion, strength, and steadfast care for families — qualities that mirror the mission of the WVU Cancer Institute and Wheeling Hospital.

“This partnership embodies the spirit of our community and our shared belief that every person deserves access to world-class care, regardless of where they live,” said Douglass Harrison, WVU Medicine North Region President. “We are deeply grateful to the Diocese for their generosity and their vision in helping us build a center that will save lives and bring hope to countless families.”

The WVU Cancer Institute St. Joseph Regional Cancer Complex will be a hub of healing and innovation, designed to deliver cutting-edge therapies, clinical trials, and comprehensive support under one roof. In addition to improving patient outcomes, the complex will serve as a resource for families, offering education, navigation, and supportive care throughout the cancer journey.

Bishop Mark E. Brennan of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston noted the importance of combining faith, science, and service in this endeavor: “St. Joseph cared for and protected the Holy Family. In the same spirit, this complex will stand as a place of healing, compassion, and strength for families across our region. The Diocese is honored to play a role in supporting this mission and investing in the health of our communities.”

Construction of the WVU Cancer Institute St. Joseph Regional Cancer Complex is part of WVU Medicine’s ongoing commitment to expand and enhance access to advanced care throughout West Virginia and the surrounding areas. The facility is expected to open in Fall 2028.
