WVU Medicine was represented on the event planning committee and by five fundraising teams, which combined to raise more than $4,300. Overall, the event raised more than $104,000 and counting.

“Morgantown now holds the record for most money raised at a JDRF Community Walk, nationwide,” Emily Smaniotto, B.S.N., R.N., C.D.C.E.S., coordinator of the Diabetes Education Center at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and JDRF Community Walk chair, said.

In addition to funding research aimed at curing Type 1 Diabetes, money raised by JDRF will help supply newly diagnosed patients with resources, including educational information, personal support, community forums, events, and more.

“Bringing a JDRF Community One Walk to Morgantown gives those with Type 1 Diabetes in our community a way to connect with others, build relationships, gain resources, and find support all while having fun,” Smaniotto said.

Dates for the 2024 walk have not been announced, but event planning is already underway.
