WVU Medicine hospitals, patients benefit from annual golf classic

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Organizers of the 36th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, sponsored by the WVU Hospitals East Foundation, are calling Monday’s event a huge success as the annual golf fund raiser exceeded its goal of $75,000.

Co-Chairs Devin McCreery and Trayer Rudy reported that 223 golfers played in the annual golf classic held at The Woods Golf Course in Hedgesville. The winning team of Chris Ross, Antonio Garcia, M.D., John Francisco, and Corey Jackson shot a 55 to earn the overall first place finish.

Heffron Company Inc., United Bank/United Wealth Management, and WVU Medicine Emergency Medicine and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute in Morgantown were this year’s presenting sponsors for the tournament. The money raised will fund equipment for the Emergency Departments at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.

“We thank all of our supporters who year after year make our golf fund raiser a huge success as one of the premier golf events in the region,” Teresa McCabe, vice president of marketing and development for WVU Medicine’s east region, said.

According to McCabe, nearly $2 million has been raised from the golf tournament over the past 36 years to fund patient care equipment, new programs, and enhanced services at Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.

The Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic is held annually on the first Monday in June.  Next year’s event will be held on June 3 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. For more information, call 304-264-1223.
