WVU Medicine hospitals, patients benefit from annual golf classic

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Organizers of the 35th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, sponsored by the WVU Hospitals East Foundation, are calling Monday’s event a huge success as the annual golf fund raiser netted $70,000.

Co-Chairs Dan Decker and Devin McCreery reported that 224 golfers played in the annual golf classic held at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. The winning team of David Langford, Antonio Garcia, Cody Eckenrode, and Adam Stewart shot a 57 to earn the overall first place finish.

AmerisourceBergen, Argos, United Bank/United Wealth Management, and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute in Morgantown were this year’s presenting sponsors for the tournament.  The money raised will fund an ultrasound machine for the expanded WVU Heart & Vascular Institute in Martinsburg which is relocating to the first floor of the Dorothy A. McCormack Center in early 2023.

“We thank all of our supporters who year after year make our golf fund raiser a huge success as one of the premier golf events in the region,” Teresa McCabe, vice president of marketing and development for WVU Medicine’s east region, said.

According to McCabe, $1.9 million has been raised from the golf tournament over the past 35 years to fund patient care equipment, new programs and enhanced services at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.

The Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic is held annually on the first Monday in June.  Next year’s event will be held on June 5 at The Woods Golf Course in Hedgesville.  For more information, call 304-264-1223 or email deborah.crites@wvumedicine.org.
