MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg is expanding its surgical capacity with the addition of five new operating rooms, officials announced today.
According to Anthony P. Zelenka, president and CEO, the new operating rooms range from 600 to 921 square feet making them much larger than traditional 380 to 450 square foot operating rooms. The larger size rooms will be able to accommodate the latest innovative technology.
“Two of our new ORs will support the latest minimally invasive robotic technology called the da Vinci Intuitive Xi®,” Zelenka said. “The precision of this advanced Xi system enhances the technical skills of the surgeons allowing the patient to heal faster with fewer complications. This results in a quicker return to a normal family and work life schedule.” Zelenka expects to have the da Vinci robot in house and operational by early 2020.
Some of the minimally invasive robotically assisted procedures that will be offered at Berkeley Medical Center with the da Vinci include kidney and bladder surgery, gynecological surgery including no-stich total hysterectomy, hernia repair and other laparoscopic surgical procedures.
The third new operating room will be dedicated to orthopedic surgical procedures including anterior total hip replacement. Since June 2014, Berkeley Medical Center’s orthopedic total hip and total knee program has achieved the highest recognition in healthcare including The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and WV Highmark Blue Distinction Center designation.
The fourth operating room is a state-of-the-art integrated vascular thoracic Stryker iSuite which will provide Berkeley Medical Center’s thoracic surgeon and future vascular surgeon with the latest technology for general minimally invasive surgical procedures. The iSuite is an OR integration of equipment and computerization that brings multifaceted efficiencies and economic benefits to the patient and the hospital.
Finally, the fifth new OR is the neurosurgery iSuite that houses the latest cutting edge neurosurgical technology including the Mazor X™ robot. Berkeley Medical Center was the first hospital in West Virginia to acquire the Mazor X to perform robotic spine surgery. With the addition of the Medtronic SteathStation Navigator, the neurosurgeons at Berkeley Medical Center have the latest technology for performing spinal and craniotomy minimally invasive surgery.
“These new operating rooms represent one of many investments that WVU Medicine has made in an effort to accommodate the growing needs of our patients and providers here in the Eastern Panhandle,” Zelenka said. “These new ORs coupled with the expertise of our entire surgical team will allow us to provide the most advance and highest quality surgical procedures in our region.”
