Dr. Matthew Thomas appointed to new infectious diseases leadership role at WVU Hospitals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Matthew Thomas, M.D., has been named healthcare epidemiologist and medical director of Infection Prevention at WVU Hospitals.

Dr. Thomas, a pediatrician and infectious diseases expert, has served as medical director of Infection Prevention at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Hospital since 2024. He will continue in that role in the newly expanded position at WVU Hospitals, which includes WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children’s, and Fairmont Medical Center. 

Prior to joining Golisano Children’s, Thomas served as vice chair of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and assistant program director for the Pediatrics program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. 

A West Virginia native, Thomas completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at West Virginia University. He went on to complete his Pediatrics residency training at Charleston Area Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident, followed by fellowship training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. 

His professional interests include the management of complex infections, reducing hospital-acquired infections, medical education, and faculty and staff professional development.
