WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Opens New Neurointerventional Radiology Suite

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Leaders from WVU Hospitals East and the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) gathered on Tuesday (April 28) to officially cut the ribbon on a new neurointerventional radiology suite at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center.

The event celebrated the opening of a cutting-edge facility that brings advanced brain and spine care closer to home for patients in the Eastern Panhandle and surrounding communities.

Neurointerventional radiology is a highly specialized field that uses minimally invasive techniques and image-guided technology to diagnose and treat complex conditions affecting the brain, spine, and blood vessels. These procedures are typically performed through small incisions using catheters and advanced imaging, offering patients shorter recovery times, a reduced risk of complications, and improved outcomes compared to traditional open surgeries.

The new suite is the result of a major renovation and expansion effort encompassing 9,400 square feet of total space, including a 2,547-square-foot building addition. Construction began in April 2024 and was completed in four phases to allow for seamless hospital operations throughout the project.

The space includes two nurse workstations, eight patient bays, a second interventional radiology procedure room, mammography/stereotactic imaging room, and a dedicated neurointerventional procedure room with an adjacent control room. The addition was also strategically designed to accommodate expansion, including an additional interventional radiology procedure room and control room, as demand for services continues to grow.

“The opening of this suite represents our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care,” Mark O’Hern, president and CEO of WVU Hospitals East, said. “With this investment, we’re ensuring that patients in our region have access to some of the most advanced neurovascular procedures available without having to leave the community.”

Berkeley Medical Center first introduced its expanded neurointerventional surgical program in January. The program offers a comprehensive range of services, including acute stroke management, aneurysm treatment, arteriovenous malformation and fistula repair, carotid and vertebral artery procedures, treatment for intracranial atherosclerotic disease, spinal interventions, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis treatment, chronic cerebrovascular care, head and neck vascular procedures, and inferior petrosal sinus sampling.

Phong Vu, M.D., an interventional neurologist with the RNI Department of Neuroradiology, performed the first neurointerventional surgical procedures at the hospital earlier this year.

“We are proud to deliver world-class, minimally invasive stroke and neurovascular care right here in Martinsburg,” Dr. Vu said. “This new suite enables us to bring the latest innovations in interventional neurology to our patients, ensuring they receive the best possible outcomes close to home.”
