What to Know about Sunscreen and Skin Health

WVU Medicine Expert talks protection from sun damage, early signs of aging, and skin cancer

Summer is on the way, and with the new season comes increased sun exposure for many. While some sun exposure comes with benefits like vitamin D production, it also comes with the risk of skin damage ranging from premature aging to skin cancer.

“If you’re spending time in the sun this season, you need to protect your skin against sunburn and ultraviolet (UV) rays,” said Sarah Cross, MS, PA-C, of WVU Medicine Plastic Surgery, in Shepherdstown. “Finding the right sunscreen can make all the difference.”

Sunscreen is designed to safeguard your skin against UV radiation from the sun. The higher a sunscreen’s sun protection factor, or SPF, the longer it protects your skin from the sun’s rays.

“Use sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30, but if you’re spending a lot of time outside or have sensitized or redness-prone skin outside, then I’d recommend SPF 50,” Cross said. “Broad spectrum sunscreen shields skin from additional harmful wavelengths including high-energy visible (HEV) light and infrared (IR-A) rays, protecting even more against skin damage.”

In addition to SPF and broad-spectrum protection, Cross says the best sunscreens are the ones you won’t mind wearing and reapplying regularly.

“Sunscreen is so important for your overall skin health – from reducing premature signs of aging to protecting yourself against skin cancers,” Cross said. “I want my patients to find sunscreen that's comfortable so they will wear it consistently. That’s often a lightweight, non-greasy option that’s sweat- and water-resistant.”

To further protect your skin from the sun and sun damage, Cross advises limiting exposure; wearing protective clothing like sleeves, hats, and sunglasses; and using hydrating, gentle skincare after time in the sun.
