WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital introduces AI-powered retinal camera for early detection of diabetic eye disease
UNIONTOWN, Pa. – WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital has introduced artificial intelligence (AI)-powered diabetic eye screenings within its primary care setting. These non-invasive, FDA-approved exams use a retinal camera to detect early signs of diabetic eye disease, offering patients more convenient access to this critical screening.
“Despite guidelines recommending annual diabetic retinal exams for all patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, only about half receive this vital screening,” Ziad Dimachkie, M.D., chief medical officer at Uniontown Hospital and associate chief quality officer for the WVU Health System, said. “By bringing this screening into primary care, we’re removing traditional barriers and giving patients convenient access to early detection tools that once required a specialist visit.”
In Fayette County, approximately one in seven adults have diabetes, which is a significantly higher rate than both the state and national averages. Improving access to early screening is essential for reducing the long-term complications of diabetes, including vision loss.
The unit, currently operating at Fay West Primary Care office in Scottdale, helps remove common barriers, such as transportation, multiple appointments, and out-of-pocket costs.
Within two months, the AI screening identified retinopathy in 18 patients, allowing for timely referral and intervention.
“Our dedication to providing complete care for our patients was the driving force behind this acquisition,” Paul Means, D.O., provider at WVU Medicine Fay West Primary Care and medical director of the WVU Health System Medical Group and, said. “The early success of this program is encouraging, and we hope to continue improving outcomes for all of our patients.”
Current Uniontown Hospital Primary Care patients in need of a diabetic retinal exam should contact their provider to schedule an appointment.
