WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals to Launch New Medical Records System and Patient Portal
South Charleston, W.Va. (May 1, 2024) -- WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals is upgrading its electronic medical records (EMR) system to Epic today, May 1, 2024. Benefits include improved quality of patient care, an integrated medical record across all WVU Medicine hospitals and physician practices, and patient access to MyWVUChart.
“Epic is an industry-leader EMR, and we are excited to transition our current system to one that will provide incredible features for providers and patients,” Greg Rosencrance, M.D., president and CEO of Thomas Hospitals, said. “In addition to creating a unified record for providers in the WVU Medicine system, Epic allows patients to easily and securely view their health records in one central location.”
Through the new patient portal, MyWVUChart.com, patients can view health information and communicate with their healthcare team, schedule appointments, view test results, request medication renewals, view and pay bills, access many MyWVUChart features via the mobile app, and more.
The Epic platform transforms care delivery by creating a single, unified patient record accessible by all authorized providers, eliminating the need for repetitive tests. Patients will also experience improved accuracy and enhanced communication with their providers. Providers will have instant access to patients’ medical history, enabling faster and more informed decisions, leading to better treatment outcomes. Epic also fosters better communication between patients and providers through secure messaging and online appointment scheduling.
“This change will bring about many long-term benefits, and I am thankful for the commitment of the Thomas Hospitals family and the entire WVU Medicine Epic Team in making this a success,” Dr. Rosencrance added. “Our caregivers have spent hours training and preparing for Epic, and we will continue to support them as they adapt to this new system.”
Epic went live at midnight on May 1. Several hundred WVU Medicine support team members will be on site at Thomas Hospitals locations throughout the next several weeks to provide in-person support during the transition. It is estimated that the direct economic impact to the Kanawha Valley from the support team visits is more than $300,000 in lodging, travel, and hospitality.
