WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute leaders co-author key JAMA Neurology article on the use of focused ultrasound to treat bilateral tremors
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Ali R. Rezai, M.D., executive chair of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI), and Ann Murray, M.D., division chief of Movement Disorders at the RNI, co-authored a recently published article in JAMA Neurology.
The article, titled “Safety and Efficacy of Staged, Bilateral Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy in Essential Tremor,” is the result of a multi-center clinical trial that determined that magnetic resonance-guided focus ultrasound may be a safe and effective option for treating bilateral essential tremor. This trial also led to the FDA approval of focused ultrasound for bilateral tremor.
The broader team involved in this research included neurosurgeons Pete Konrad, M.D., Ph.D., Nicholas Brandmeir, M.D., and Manish Ranjan, M.D., along with RNI clinical trial research team leaders, Victor Finomore, Ph.D., executive director of research operations, and Padmashree Tirumalai, Ph.D., C.C.R.P., clinical research operations director.
The article was published online by the journal on July 29.
