WVU Medicine drives $1.1 Billion in economic impact in the Eastern Panhandle, according to new FY24 Report 

 

Martinsburg, W.Va.  A new independent analysis conducted by Tripp Umbach confirms the significant role WVU Medicine plays as an economic engine, healthcare leader, and community anchor across West Virginia and in the Eastern Panhandle. 

Statewide, the combined impact of WVU and WVU Medicine totaled $14.3 billion in FY24, supporting 84,519 jobsor one in every nine jobs in West Virginia. 

In the Eastern Panhandle alone, WVU Medicine generated: 

  • $1.1 billion in economic activity 

  • 5,609 jobs supported 

  • $64.8 million in state and local tax revenue 

“WVU Medicine’s mission extends beyond clinical excellence,” said Mark O’Hern, President & CEO of WVU Hospitals East. “Our presence fuels job creation, strengthens the regional economy, and ensures that families across the Eastern Panhandle have access to high-quality care close to home.” 

WVU Medicine remains the largest employer in the region, operating an expanding network of hospitals, clinics, and specialty services that attract physicians, generate local spending, and support small businesses. 

The full FY24 report also underscores WVU Medicine’s statewide contributions, including: 

  • $11.2 billion in statewide economic impact

  • 56,224 jobs supported 

  • $686.5 million in state and local tax revenue 

O’Hern shared that two major expansion projects, one at Berkeley Medical Center and the other at Jefferson Medical Center, will create an additional 500 jobs and significant economic impact, as the health system expands its brick and mortar, as well as staffing, to ensure timely access to care for the Eastern Panhandle’s growing population.
