Cold and flu season is in full swing, and cases are on the rise in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and surrounding communities. The exterior of the WVU Medicine Urgent Care location in the Spring Mills area.

Deciding when to seek medical treatment and when to heal at home can be difficult when you’re feeling sick. Dr. Afsoun Sichani, Medical Director of WVU Medicine Urgent Care-East, says understanding your flu symptoms is key to stopping the spread of these illnesses during respiratory season.

“When to stay home versus when to come to Urgent Care are some common questions that we get,” Dr. Sichani said.

When to Stay Home with the Flu

She recommends staying home and treating with over-the-counter (OTC) medications, rest, and hydration if you have the following flu symptoms:

  • Low-grade fever.
  • Mild cough.
  • Minimal respiratory symptoms.

When to Visit Urgent Care for the Flu

Dr. Sichani says it's best to seek treatment at WVU Medicine Urgent Care locations if you’re experiencing:

  • Severe cough.
  • High and persistent fever.
  • Pre-existing, chronic medical conditions that put you at risk for flu complications.

“If your symptoms are mild, you can stay home and get some rest and hydrate yourself,” Dr. Sichani said. “We want to help you prevent complications and hospitalizations for the flu.”
