WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center announces perioperative, clinical expansion project

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center has announced plans for a $37.8 million project to expand perioperative and clinical space on the hospital’s first floor.

Berkeley Medical Center began expanding its surgical capacity in 2018 with the addition of five new operating rooms. This new project will complete that expansion by adding both pre-operative (pre-op) and post anesthesia care unit (PACU) space, allowing the full complement of operating rooms to be utilized. It will also allow for the expansion of cardiovascular surgery capabilities by combining two smaller operating rooms and converting them into a hybrid operating room featuring advanced procedural space and an image-guided interventional suite.

This project also includes the expansion of laboratory space and the addition of a new 20-bed observation unit and a neuro-interventional biplane suite, the latter of which will be used to provide comprehensive stroke care and treatment of other disorders of the brain and spine including aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVM.)

According to Dean Thomas, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, in addition to creating more square footage, this project will allow the hospital to expand services and better utilize existing space.

“As our community continues to grow at a rapid rate, it’s more important than ever to make the best use of our current space while exploring opportunities for expansion,” Thomas said. “The perioperative and clinical expansion project will not only give us the necessary pre-op and PACU space to use all of our operating rooms simultaneously, but it allows us to continue adding and expanding new specialty services so patients can stay closer to home for advanced surgical care.”

Construction of the nearly 14,000 square foot addition will begin in early October. An additional 20,000 square feet of existing space will also be under construction during renovations. Beginning October 2, the Same Day Surgery entrance of Berkeley Medical Center near Tavern Road will be closed to patients, employees, and visitors for approximately 6 months. During this time, new signage will direct patients to alternative parking and entrances.
