Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU)
With advanced expertise and continuous monitoring, our Neurocritical Care team is dedicated to delivering high-level, specialized care for patients with serious neurological conditions, suffering from severe brain injuries, stroke, or brain tumors.
Neurocritical Care
The Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is a 20-bed unit on the sixth floor dedicated to caring for patients with the most serious neurological conditions. Led by board-certified neurology intensivists, our team specializes in treating patients with severe brain injuries, strokes, brain tumors, and those recovering from complex neurosurgical or minimally invasive endovascular procedures.
As part of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute – a Joint Commission–certified Comprehensive Stroke Center – we are equipped to manage the most complex stroke and neurological cases. Our multidisciplinary team works together to deliver expert, patient-centered care grounded in innovation, teamwork, and a shared commitment to excellence.
What We Do
Our Neurocritical Care team includes neurology intensivists, residents, critical care nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and neurological specialists who collaborate to care for patients with life-threatening neurological conditions. This includes individuals experiencing severe brain injuries, acute strokes, brain tumors, and complications requiring neurosurgical or endovascular intervention.
Patients recovering from minimally invasive procedures to treat aneurysms or other cerebrovascular diseases are also closely monitored in the NCCU to ensure safe, high-quality recovery.
Our NCCU nurses receive advanced training specific to neurological critical care, with many achieving additional degrees and specialty certifications. With continuous coverage by attending physicians and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, we provide comprehensive, specialized care tailored to each patient’s needs.
What to Expect
The NCCU is patient centered. Patients (to the extent they are able) and families participate in all discussions and decisions about care. A patient’s length of stay in the NCCU can range from hours to months depending upon the extent of the illness or injury. Communication is a top priority on the unit, with nursing staff providing regular updates on patients’ conditions to family members.
