Empowering communities and saving lives through outreach and education

Community outreach is at the heart of what we do at the WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute. We are dedicated to reducing traumatic injuries and empowering our community with life-saving knowledge and skills.

Through programs – like our Mountaineer Trauma Support Group, Race to Rebuild, and Stop the Bleed – we strive to make a meaningful impact.

And each year, at our Trauma Night of Recognition, we take the opportunity to honor the incredible medical professionals who support trauma care across our region, while recognizing survivors of harrowing traumatic injuries.

Mountaineer Trauma Support Group

The Mountaineer Trauma Support Group offers patients and families a supportive environment to connect with others who have experienced trauma.

Monthly meetings provide a platform for trauma survivors and their families to share experiences, learn coping strategies, and gain peer support.
The meetings are held virtually via Microsoft Teams at 6 pm on the third Thursday of each month.

For more information about the support group or to join the meetings, please email [email protected] or contact: Hailey Swift, BSN, RN, CCRN, at 304-598-4659 or [email protected].

Trauma Survivors Network

The Trauma Survivors Network (TSN), established in 2008 by the American Trauma Society, connects survivors and their families to a supportive community focused on education, empowerment, and recovery. While advancements in trauma care over the past 50 years have greatly reduced mortality and morbidity, long-term outcomes remain challenging. TSN addresses these challenges by emphasizing the importance of emotional recovery and peer support – key factors shown to improve post-trauma outcomes.

Race to Rebuild

The WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center, along with the Mountaineer Trauma Support Group, hosts an annual 5K and one-mile walk/run/cycle/roll event on the Ruby Memorial Hospital campus each year.

This event is part of the American Trauma Society and Trauma Survivors Network’s virtual event, Race to Rebuild.

The initiative supports trauma survivors as they rebuild their lives after a traumatic event.

There is no cost to participate in the Race to Rebuild, and advance registration is not required.

Night of Recognition

The WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center Night of Recognition is an annual event held each fall to recognize the hard work and dedication of the many medical professionals who comprise the trauma system – from the scene of the injury through inpatient hospital care to rehabilitation and recovery.

During the event, trauma patients’ stories are shared, and representatives from each stage of their care are presented with a Cornerstone of Recovery Award.

Watch the remarkable stories of some recent Night of Recognition honorees and hear from the medical professionals who worked to save their lives.
