World-class critical care

Services provided at the WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute are the centerpiece of the critical care mission of WVU Medicine. Established in December 2015, the Institute is a leading provider of specialized care to critically ill and injured patients throughout West Virginia and the Appalachian region.

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 28-bed unit providing advanced, compassionate care for critically ill cardiac patients. Led by expert critical care intensivists and supported by a multidisciplinary team, we deliver comprehensive, patient-centered treatment for complex medical conditions. Through collaboration, innovation, and specialized expertise, we are committed to helping each patient achieve the best possible outcome.

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is a 28-bed unit dedicated to caring for critically ill adult and geriatric patients. Led by pulmonary intensivists with advanced expertise in critical care medicine, our multidisciplinary team delivers specialized, evidence-based treatment to each patient.

Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU)

The Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU) is a 20-bed unit providing expert, patient-centered care for critically ill and injured neurological patients. Our multidisciplinary team delivers advanced treatment through close collaboration and specialized expertise. As part of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and a Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, we are equipped to manage the most complex neurological emergencies with innovation, precision, and compassion.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 12-bed unit delivering specialized, high-acuity care for critically ill and injured surgical patients. The unit is staffed by a dedicated multidisciplinary team with expertise in general surgery, trauma, neurosurgery, pediatrics, and more. Our team is committed to providing expert, compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs.
