WVU CRITICAL CARE & TRAUMA INSTITUTE

Virtual Intensive Care Unit (VICU)

At WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, we are advancing patient care through virtual technology and regional collaboration.

Expanding Access to Expert Critical Care Through Virtual Innovation

As the WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute continues to extend its range of support for medical centers throughout West Virginia and the region, a focus on the use of technology is expanding virtual care services across a range of hospital programs. Virtual care services allow providers at medical treatment centers to consult directly with highly trained critical care specialists.

What We Do

Through advanced telemedicine technology, the Virtual Intensive Care Unit (VICU) program connects community hospitals with board-certified intensivists at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. The program enhances collaboration between local care teams and critical care specialists, ensuring patients receive high-level critical care without leaving their “home” hospital.

What to Expect

Using secure video connections, our intensivists conduct daily virtual rounds and provide 24/7 on-call support for emergent concerns. Together with local physicians, they review each patient’s condition, discuss treatment options, and develop a coordinated care plan tailored to the individual’s needs. This partnership builds trust and relationships with the providers and ensures effective patient management.
