Inpatient rehabilitation at WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital has a primary emphasis on helping patients reach their maximum independence in living skills, mobility, and communication.
One of the many benefits of our Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) is its location within the hospital. This allows access to all our services without having to leave the building.
We use an interdisciplinary approach to develop an individualized rehabilitation program for each of our patients. Patients are active members of the team, participating in goal setting and development of their program.
Members of this interdisciplinary team may include:
- Audiologist
- Clergy
- Dietician
- Family and friends
- Hospitalists
- Nursing staff
- Occupational therapy staff
- Physical therapy staff
- Rehabilitation physician
- Rehabilitation nursing staff
- Social worker
- Speech/language pathology staff
- Transition coordinator
Patients may be admitted to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit from another unit in our hospital, from another hospital, or directly from home if recommended by a doctor or therapist.
Inpatient rehabilitation is primarily considered for patients with the following medical conditions:
- Amputation
- Brain injury
- Burns
- Other illnesses that require rehabilitation
Patients are screened by our staff and medical director to determine the need for inpatient rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation is a dynamic process that requires ongoing participation from the patient.
The person must:
- Have the expectation of functional improvement through intensive rehabilitation services within a reasonable period of time
- Have other medical problems that need to be treated or observed during rehabilitation
- Have multiple or complex rehabilitation nursing needs and/or require highly skilled medical nursing
- Require a daily minimum of three hours of therapy at least five days per week
- Have a reasonable discharge plan to return to home or the community
