WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and WVU Heart and Vascular Institute open new, expanded cardiovascular clinic

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Leaders from WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute cut the ribbon on a new, expanded cardiovascular clinic on Thursday at the Dorothy McCormack Center in Martinsburg.

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute first opened a clinic at Berkeley Medical Center in 2017, marking the expansion of cardiovascular services in the eastern region. In addition to eight cardiologists, the Heart and Vascular team in Martinsburg has expanded in recent years to include both a vascular and a thoracic surgeon.

According to Dean Thomas, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Center, a larger clinic was necessary to accommodate the rapid growth of cardiovascular services in the eastern region.

“Over the past two years, we have dedicated a great deal of resources to improving access to cardiac care and expanding services in the eastern region,” Thomas said. “We’ve recruited a full team of cardiologists and have added vascular and thoracic surgery programs but did not have adequate clinic space that was convenient for our patients. Our new, expanded clinic will allow us to keep growing our cardiovascular services to meet the needs of the communities we serve.”

Construction of the new, 10,000 square foot clinic began in Oct. 2022 at the Dorothy McCormack Center. It includes 12 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, two echocardiogram rooms, office space for providers, a dedicated patient entrance and waiting area, and all the required ancillary and support spaces. It also includes more than 2,000 square feet of adjacent space for a new cardiopulmonary rehabilitation suite with space for over 20 pieces of rehab equipment.

“The expansion and continued investment in cardiovascular and thoracic services of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute across our state and region fulfills our commitment to keep patients close to home whenever possible,” Vinay Badhwar, M.D., executive chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, said. “Through the superb collaboration with the staff and physicians of Berkeley Medical Center and the close partnership of Mr. Thomas, this is just one more step closer to our mission to provide a full spectrum of services to the patients of the Eastern Panhandle, western Virginia, and Maryland.”

The clinic will begin seeing patients on May 15 at 2000 Foundation Way in Martinsburg. Other WVU Heart and Vascular Institute locations in the eastern region include Ranson and Shepherdstown in West Virginia; Hagerstown, Maryland; and Winchester, Virginia.
