LEVEL 1 AND LEVEL 2 TRAUMA CARE

The WVU Critical Care and Trauma Institute is proud to operate northern West Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma center – the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. It’s among only 100 Level 1 trauma centers in the nation and is the only American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified Level 1 (adult) and Level 2 (pediatrics) trauma center in the region.

Established in 1987, the ACS Committee on Trauma’s Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers that provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.

While trauma centers are established and designated by local, regional, or state agencies, the ACS Committee on Trauma’s Consultation/Verification Program provides confirmation that the center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all patients.

Verified trauma centers must meet essential criteria that ensures trauma care capability and institutional performance as outlined by the ACS Committee on Trauma in its current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual.

Who We Are

The Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center was created in the 1980s with the assistance and support of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd. The center is named for his grandson, Jon Michael Moore, who died as the result of an automobile crash.

Our Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center team is composed of highly trained and experienced professionals dedicated to providing exceptional care. Our physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and trauma technicians work together seamlessly, combining expertise with compassion to deliver evidence-based treatment.

Excellence in bedside care is our top priority. In addition to treating patients, our world-class trauma specialists support emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and flight nurses; collaborate with multidisciplinary teams; and co-manage the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) to ensure comprehensive, life-saving care.

What We Offer

Serving as an essential part of emergency care at WVU Medicine, our trauma team maintains 24-hour coverage in the Emergency Department at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and provides expert care for patients with severe musculoskeletal injuries and related complications.

In addition to caring for the injured, we work to promote wellness and injury prevention through community education, outreach initiatives, and legislation at the local, state, and federal levels.

A Level 1 trauma center signifies the highest level of trauma care designation, meaning a hospital is fully equipped to handle the most complex traumatic injuries. A Level 1 trauma center provides immediate access to a wide range of surgical specialties and critical care services 24/7, making it a regional referral point for severe injuries requiring comprehensive care – from injury prevention to rehabilitation.

Traumatic injuries can happen at any time, to anyone. When caring for children with potentially life-changing or life-threatening injuries, quick assessments and treatments are critical. Fortunately, the pediatric trauma team at the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center is always ready to respond.

As the only pediatric trauma center in West Virginia verified as Level 2 by the ACS, we provide comprehensive trauma care to children of all ages – from birth through adolescence.

We’re also here to provide the emotional support your family needs during your child’s treatment and recovery.
