Our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation team is comprised of physicians, nurses, dieticians, exercise physiologists, education specialists and certified diabetes educators.

We believe in an individualized approach to care, with each rehabilitation plan customized to the patient’s particular needs.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation nursing staff has met strict standards of practice and been awarded certification through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab (AACVPR.)

At Berkeley Medical Center, our cardiopulmonary rehabilitation team works to help you resume your normal lifestyle as soon as possible following a heart or lung problem.

About Our Programs

Our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs last up to 12 weeks. Patients have three, one hour visits each week, which include a supervised program of exercise using strength and endurance-building equipment like:

  • Arm ergometers
  • Bicycles
  • Hand weights
  • Recumbent stepper
  • Treadmills

Our team uses an individualized approach to patient care. The rehab plan is customized to each patient’s needs, and that plan is continuously evaluated. To complement the exercise program, education sessions include topics related to cardiopulmonary disease such as risk factors, diet, cholesterol, stress management, medications, re-breathing techniques and smoking cessation.

After completion of the 12-week monitored program, each patient can take part in a continued maintenance program, if desired. For a nominal charge per session, the program provides for the development of a healthy lifestyle.

Cardiopulmonary rehab is covered by many insurance plans. A physician order is required for participation. Talk to your physician to see if Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation may be appropriate for you.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the care offered for patients who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, valve replacement, heart transplant, peripheral artery disease, angina or angioplasty, or are at high risk for cardiovascular disease.

Our providers recognize the emotional burdens associated with heart attacks, such as depression, anxiety, fear, and anger. We often link rehab patients with a specialist from our mental health services to help them deal with the after-effects of their care.

Nutrition plays an important part in keeping a heart healthy. Our physicians and dietitians can provide patients with healthy diet counseling and assessment. Our dietary recommendations are customized based on individual needs and preferences.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

If you are suffering from a lung problem like asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, COPD, or a similar diagnosis, Pulmonary Rehabilitation can help improve your quality of life and lead to improved breathing effort and less breathing problems. Through a combination of exercises, education and psychosocial support, our providers can help you decrease the symptoms of your condition and help alleviate the emotional burden of dealing with a breathing issue.

Components of effective pulmonary rehabilitation include education related to medications, oxygen therapy, nutrition and weight management and breathing retraining. Exercise is tailored to each patient’s individual needs, and psychosocial support to help patients deal with the emotional burden of lung problems.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation may be helpful for those who experience problems such as:

  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Lung transplant
  • Sarcoidosis
