At the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, our board-certified physicians are performing groundbreaking procedures using cutting edge techniques. Our nationally recognized team of cardiac experts perform thousands of procedures annually and make your heart their priority.
Interventional cardiologists use non-surgical techniques with catheters, balloons, and stents to repair blockages in the arteries of the heart and other areas of the body. Many patients can go home on the same day of their procedure
For heart attack patients, the national goal for “door to balloon time” (the time from arrival at the hospital until opening the blockage) is 90 minutes or less. The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute far exceeds that goal.
We have the doctors, technology, and facilities, including our cardiac labs, clinics across the eastern panhandle, and cardiac rehab, to make a rapid diagnosis and take quick, effective action 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Treatments and Services
- Balloon angioplasty and stents
- Cardiac catheterization using radial artery access (through the arm)
- Echocardiography
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillators
- Lower extremity and renal artery stenting
- Pacemakers
- Stress testing
Transradial Cardiac Catheterization
WVU Heart and Vascular Institute interventional cardiologists can perform cardiac catheterization through the wrist instead of through the femoral artery (groin).
The advantages of using the radial artery as an access point include:
- Decreased risk of complications from bleeding
- Faster recovery time
- Greater patient comfort
- Faster mobility
- Shorter hospital stays
Women, older, or obese patients may especially benefit from radial artery access.
