Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a procedure for treating depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in patients who have not responded to medications. It uses focused, brief, repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate brain cells and help normalize brain activity. The electromagnetic coil used is similar to the one used in an MRI

How is TMS different from other treatments?

TMS does not require medications, sedation, or anesthesia. Patients are awake and alert during the treatments and can immediately return to normal activities. TMS is very safe and has very few side effects. Temporary scalp discomfort or mild headache are possible.

What happens during TMS?

The treatment sessions take place in the WVU Medicine Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry office in Martinsburg. The treatment team includes, a psychiatrist, and a nurse. Treatment sessions generally last around 20 to 45 minutes. The initial session and set-up usually lasts about an hour.

Patients are seated in a special chair. An electromagnetic coil is placed on the head. The coil generates a series of brief, rapid, repetitive magnetic pulses that feel like a tapping on your head. These magnetic pulses activate nerve cells near the surface of the brain that communicate with nerves deeper in the brain in areas known to be affected by depression

Once the treatment is completed, the patient can leave on his/her own and go back to normal activities.

Does insurance cover TMS?

Most insurance companies cover TMS, but some may have specific criteria for coverage. Our treatment team will work with you and your insurance company to determine if TMS is an option for you. Copays may apply.
