WVU Medicine welcomes 12 future nurses through Aspiring Nurse Program
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine has welcomed 12 future nurses to its Aspiring Nurse Program, a partnership between WVU Medicine in the Eastern Panhandle and area schools designed to strengthen the pipeline of nurses who will care for the community.
The program offers both financial and personal support to nursing students as they complete their education and prepare for their careers. Participants receive up to $25,000 in assistance, including a sign-on bonus and funding for expenses across four semesters, in exchange for a three-year work commitment at WVU Medicine following graduation.
“Skilled nurses are in extremely high demand across the country, and that need is especially critical in our region,” said Rebecca Shumaker, director of professional practice and education for Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers. “This program not only helps students achieve their goals but also ensures that our hospitals and communities have the dedicated, highly trained professionals they need to deliver exceptional care.”
As part of the program, students from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and West Virginia Junior College complete clinical rotations at both Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center, gaining broad, hands-on experience while staying connected to the patients and communities they will serve as registered nurses. Each student is also paired with a WVU Medicine liaison who mentors them throughout nursing school and supports their transition into practice.
