Jefferson Medical Center reaches major milestone with 100 robotic-assisted surgeries using da Vinci surgical system
RANSON, W.Va. – Members of the surgical team at WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center gathered on Monday (Dec. 16) to celebrate the successful completion of over 100 robotic-assisted surgeries using the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System.
The da Vinci Xi Surgical System was first introduced at Jefferson Medical Center in April, with Jan Kletter, M.D., chief of surgery, performing the inaugural procedure—a cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal. Since then, the surgical team has utilized the system for a range of procedures, including hernia repairs, hysterectomies, and other general and gynecologic surgeries.
“Reaching 100 procedures in such a short time demonstrates the impact this technology has had on our community,” Kletter said. “With the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, we’re able to offer patients smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times. It’s rewarding to see how these benefits improve the lives of our patients while keeping them close to home for care.”
The da Vinci Xi Surgical System, developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc., combines cutting-edge technology with the expertise of specially trained surgeons. Key features include an ergonomically designed console, interactive robotic arms, and a 3D HD vision system, all designed to enhance surgical precision and efficiency.
“The success of this program reflects our team’s dedication to providing the highest quality care,” Kletter added. “We are grateful for the trust our patients place in us and are excited to continue expanding access to advanced surgical options for our region.”
Jefferson Medical Center launched its robotic-assisted surgery program in 2020 when it became the first hospital in the region to introduce the ROSA Knee System for total knee replacement and later, the ROSA Hip System for hip replacement. The addition of the da Vinci surgical system highlights the hospital’s commitment to being a leader in robotic-assisted surgery and delivering advanced surgical care to Jefferson County and the surrounding area.
